[What is a Koinobori?]
A koinobori is a carp-shaped streamer or banner traditionally displayed in Japan on Children’s Day (May 5th) to celebrate the healthy growth and future success of boys. The design symbolizes a carp swimming upstream and transforming into a dragon—an expression of the hope that children will grow strong, overcome challenges, and achieve greatness in life.
These koinobori (carp streamers) are individually hand-dyed using a traditional Edo-period stencil dyeing technique that has been passed down through generations in Japan. Each piece is carefully crafted by hand, using traditional Japanese washi paper.
